Trussville grew fast. The subdivisions out along Highway 11, through the Cahaba Project area and up around Deerfoot and Trussville Springs represent several distinct building waves, and the concrete tells you which one a house belongs to.

Why new slabs are harder, not easier

This is the single most useful thing on this page and it surprises nearly everyone.

A builder's garage floor is finished with a power trowel, which burnishes the surface to a hard, smooth, closed finish. That looks good and it sheds water. It is also almost the worst possible surface for bonding a coating to, because there is no profile for anything to key into.

Preparing it means grinding through that burnished layer with aggressive diamond tooling until the surface is open. On a worn thirty-year-old slab, the grinding is quicker, because decades of use have already opened it.

So a five-year-old Trussville garage frequently takes longer to prepare than a fifty-year-old one in Crestwood. When people ask why a nearly new floor costs the same, that is the answer.

Curing, and why timing matters on very new houses

Concrete needs to cure before it takes a coating. Twenty-eight days is the usual minimum quoted and longer is better, particularly on a slab poured in cool weather.

There is a second issue on brand new construction: curing compounds. Many builders spray a membrane-forming curing compound onto fresh slabs to control moisture loss. That has to come off completely, and it is not always obvious it is there until the grinder finds it.

Three-car garages

Common in the newer Trussville subdivisions and they change the conversation practically.

More area means a better price per square foot, because setup and mobilisation do not scale with size. It also usually means the floor is doing more than one job: two bays for cars, one for the mower, the freezer, the workbench and the storage racking.

That third bay is where texture earns its keep. It takes the most dropped objects, the most dragged equipment and the most dirt, and a full flake broadcast handles all of it better than a solid colour does.

Worth deciding before the day whether the third bay gets any different treatment. Usually it does not, but occasionally a workbench area justifies more aggregate for grip.

What Trussville garages actually get used for

Boats and trailers come up more here than in most of the metro, given the proximity to the Cahaba and the lakes. That matters for two reasons.

A trailer jack or a tongue stand puts concentrated point load on a small area, and repeated loading in the same spot is harder on a coating than a car is. Where a boat lives in the garage, we would want to know where the jack lands.

And trailers bring water in. A boat coming back on a Sunday drips for hours, and that means standing water in the bay overnight. Grip matters more in that bay, and so does making sure the floor drains or at least does not pond.

The Cahaba Project and the older core

The original Trussville housing around the Cahaba Project is a completely different proposition from the newer subdivisions: 1930s planned community houses, smaller, often with detached or later-added garages.

Those slabs are old, frequently painted, and sometimes were not garage slabs originally. We treat them the way we treat any older concrete, starting with finding out what is on top of it.

Storms and what they do to a garage

Trussville sits in a part of the state that takes severe weather, and garages here take wind-driven rain under the door more than most.

The strip inside the garage door is the most exposed part of any garage floor and the first place a poor job fails. It takes water, UV through the open door, and the most temperature movement. On a Trussville garage that regularly gets water under the door in a storm, that band gets particular attention, and where the slab edge is damaged it gets rebuilt before anything else happens.
